Do I Need a Pre-Emergent Herbicide to Grow Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola?
NO, there are many benefits in eliminating a pre-emergent application in your production of Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola. These include:

  • save time and soil moisture by eliminating tillage to incorporate
  • higher yields by seeding canola earlier in the spring
  • maximize your cropping options for current and following crop year
  • better canola emergence from shallow seeding and a firm seed bed.

Roundup® brand herbicides control a much broader spectrum of grass and broadleaf annual weeds than pre-emergent canola herbicides. Weed control with Roundup includes some hard to control weeds like wild buckwheat, kochia, chickweed and wild oats that are currently controlled by pre-emergents, as well as other weeds like volunteer barley, stinkweed, cleavers, hemp nettle and wild mustard which are not controlled by pre-emergents.

With a wide application window, from 0 to 6 leaf canola, apply Roundup as the canola emerges (ie: cotyledon stage) to best control early emerging weeds and maximize crop yield. If a second flush of weeds occurs Roundup can be used again, up to the 6 leaf stage of canola.

How Can I Minimize the Risk of Roundup Drift When I Spray Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola?
The potential for drift exists with any pesticide, but it can be controlled with proper application and timing. The potential for Roundup to drift is less than most pesticides because Roundup is nonvolatile. Roundup is, however, susceptible to particle or inversion drift.

To minimize the risk of drift, applicators are recommended to do the following:

  • Select size of nozzle type (ie: Turbo Teejet, Turbo Floodjet, Drift Guards, XR Teejet) to produce coarse droplets (400 - 800 microns).
  • Use lower pressure (30 instead of 40 psi).
  • Increase water volume (10 instead of 5 gpa).
  • Lower boom height.
  • Do not apply when wind velocity and direction may drift to sensitive crops. Avoid application under "gusty" wind conditions.
  • Apply when the temperature is cool and relative humidity is higher.
  • Use spray boom shields/windscreens where possible.

How Do I Control Volunteer Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola?
Keeping good records of fields with Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola will be an important aspect of field management. Volunteer Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola can be controlled with tillage or any current herbicide, except Roundup and Rustler®, currently registered for control of volunteer canola. For direct seeders, Monsanto research indicates that the addition of 2,4-D (0.23 L/acre of 500g/L amine formulation or 0.16 L/acre of 700 g/L ester formulation) to a Roundup burn-off provides good consistent control of volunteer Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola prior to seeding a cereal crop. Follow-up in-crop treatments will be required for later germinating seeds.

Controlling Volunteer Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola
Volunteer canola typically germinates and emerges as the soil warms up in the spring. Before using any preseed treatments, check the field to see what weeds need to be controlled, and pick the right product or products for the weeds in that field. For producers looking to control volunteer Genuity™ Roundup Ready® Canola that has germinated prior to seeding, there are several cost-effective tank mix registrations available.
